Hornbeam / Carpinus betulus

This deciduous tree similar to green beech can be trimmed into the most glorious of hedges. It has oval, ridged, dark green leaves, which turn to rich oranges and yellows in the autumn. Hornbeam is easily grown as a hedge and does especially well on chalk soils. If trimmed in late summer, a large proportion of the crisp, dead leaves are retained well into winter. Tolerates hard pruning, shade and is more suited to wet soils than beech
- Full sun / partial shade
- any soil
- Growth rate: 30 – 60 cm per annum
Hedge plant spacing guide
Plant at 9 – 18 in (25 - 45cm) apart for hedges 3 foot upwards or for a denser or stock-proof hedge plant in a staggered double row 18in (45cm) apart and 15in (35cm) between rows.
