Photinia Red Robin Hedging Plants

Photinia fraseri, Christmas Berry Hedge

Photinia Red Robin is a very popular garden plant that makes a fantastic hedge. The outstanding feature of this broad-leaved evergreen shrub is the brilliant red, glossy young foliage that provides a flush of colour during spring and summer. Quite stunning on masse, the young leaves start out almost pink, slowly turning brilliant red then to bronze and later maturing to dark green. Photinia Red Robin produce clusters of creamy white flowers in late spring and these are sometimes followed by red berry-like fruit. Photinia hedges respond well to trimming. To create a denser more formal hedge, pruning should be carried out right from the start. If Photinia are left unchecked the hedge can become leggy and sparse. If trimmed twice a year (spring and summer) Photinia can be kept as a dense, formal, evergreen hedge up to 4m high. Less formal if just trimmed once a year. Trimming the hedge during the growing season also provides a flush of new growth of the colourful young leaves. Photinia Red Robin would be an excellent choice for a fast growing evergreen hedge, enhancing the garden or boundaries with splashes of pink, red, bronze and green during the Spring and Summer and providing some much needed colour in Winter.
