Yew Hedging Conifers

Taxus baccata, Yew Hedge

Yew Hedging plants are a classic and have been used for centuries as defining features in the gardens of many English country homes. Common Yew is one of the most popular choices for a formal hedge and it is also well suited to topiary. Although Yew is often considered slower growing it often grows more quickly than anticipated. At 30cm on average per year, a six foot hedge can be achieved in an acceptable timeframe. The advantage of this is that once your Yew Hedge has reached its desired height it is much easier to maintain. A Yew hedge will tolerate very close clipping and also has the ability to regenerate green growth from older wood. An overgrown Yew hedge can often be restored with hard pruning in late Winter/ early Spring.
Yew will form a dense evergreen hedge with small, linear, dark green leaves. The male plants produce yellow cones in spring, which give rise to the small, red, seed bearing fruits on female plants. Yew Hedges are easy to grow and are tolerant of many different soils and conditions with the exception being waterlogged sites. Yew will make an excellent feature as a formal hedge within any contemporary or traditional setting.
